چکیده

Abstract A hybrid switching amplitude modulator for class-E2 EDGE polar transmitters is proposed. To achieve both high-efficiency and high-speed, it consists of a wideband buffered linear amplifier as a voltage source and a hysteresis-controlled switching amplifier as a dependent current source. The novel linear amplifier has a high current driving capability of approximately 160mA with a bandwidth wider than 7MHz. It can also operate on two quadrants with very low output impedance of about 300mΩ around the switching frequency attenuating the output ripple voltage. The output voltage of the hybrid modulator ranges from 0.3V to 3V for a 3.3V supply. It can drive an RF power amplifier with an equivalent impedance of 7Ω up to a maximum output power of 1.1W with a maximum efficiency of about 85%. The chip is fabricated using thick-oxide devices in a 0.13um CMOS process and occupies an area of 3.9mm.

A Low-Noise Delta-Sigma Phase Modulator for Polar Transmitters

A low-noise phase modulator, using finite-impulse-response (FIR) filtering embedded delta-sigma (ΔΣ) fractional-N phase-locked loop (PLL), is fabricated in 0.18 μ m CMOS for GSM/EDGE polar transmitters. A simplified digital compensation filter with inverse-FIR and -PLL features is proposed to trade off the transmitter noise and linearity. Experimental results show that the presented architectur...

Fully Integrated CMOS Switching Power Mixer Array for Linearization and Back-Off Efficiency Improvement

Non-constant envelope modulation schemes have become commonplace in cellular applications due to their higher spectral efficiency. Linear PAs driven by an RF transmitter are usually used to generate these signals faithfully at the expense of power efficiency. Separate processing of amplitude and phase information (e.g., EER or polar modulation) has been proposed [1] as a way of improving the sy...

Self-Calibrated Two-Point Delta–Sigma Modulation Technique for RF Transmitters

A self-calibrated two-point delta–sigma modulation technique for CMOS RF transmitter is proposed. This calibration technique employs voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) and delta–sigma modulator input ports in a frequency synthesizer. By monitoring the control voltage of a loop filter, the gain mismatch between two paths can be detected and completely calibrated by modifying the gain of the VCO...
